Scoutmaster has proven to be a worthy fundraiser � Standard-Times: Raising $1.2 million in the two years he's been in San Angelo, Reeve was able to speak about fundraising challenges from a West Texas perspective in his 90-minute presentation, which, after an introduction of what Boy Scouts is all about, dealt with rebounding from natural catastrophes that the council endured last year.

Tory budget toughens rules governing foreign charities | The Chronicle Herald: OTTAWA — The Conservative government is threatening to decertify foreign charities that do not act “in the national interest of Canada.”

Under rules announced Thursday in the 2012 budget, foreign groups can apply for registered charity status if they meet one of two criteria. The first is providing disaster relief or urgent humanitarian aid. The second is if they work in the national interest of Canada.

Toronto, ON – Most (71%) Canadians ‘agree’ (25% strongly/47% somewhat) that ‘charities play an important role in society as a change agent to address needs not being met by government or the private sector’, according to a new Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. In fact, just one in ten (10%) ‘disagree’ 93% strongly/7% somewhat) with this premise, while 19% neither agree nor disagree. In contrast, just 13% ‘agree’ (3% strongly/10% somewhat) that ‘charities do not make much difference’, while most (71%) ‘disagree’ (34% strongly/37% somewhat) that they don’t make a difference.

Survey Says: CharityVillage� unpacks findings from the 2010 CGVSP: Statistics Canada released the results of its 2010 Canadian Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating (CSGVP) last Wednesday.

Released every three years, this iteration again provides some intriguing updates to how much (and how many) Canadians are giving back to their communities.

Here's the first number on StatCan's list: 24 million.

That represents the number of Canadians who made donations to charities in 2010.

Think about that. That's close to 84% of Canadians who took time to fish into their wallets or purses and shell out some cash for a cause. It also represents a total of $10.6 billion donated in 2010. However, the survey notes that both the percentage of the population donating and the total amount of donations remained virtually unchanged from 2007, with the average donation in 2010 at $446.

Half of those 18-34 give to charities without checking: Just over half of them will donate on the spur of the moment, which adds the probability they won't check to see if the organization is legitimate first, according to a survey commissioned by CanadaHelps.org and Capital One Canada for Fraud Prevention Month.

Only 19 per cent of millennials, as people in that age group are commonly known, are concerned about being victims of a scam - compared to 27 per cent in other age groups.

Millennials discover a whole world of philanthropy: The Millennial generation, who are mostly in their 20s now, are often still in school or just starting their careers and therefore don't have as much money to donate as they do time.

"Older generations are able to donate more monetarily," Eveleigh says.

The statistics back that up. The highest rates of volunteering were found among young Canadians, while those who give the most money are more likely to be older, have higher household incomes and more formal education, according to Statistics Canada's National Survey of Giving

"We have begun a rapid assessment of the situation to gather information about the damage, and we are in contact with churches and other non-government partners in the area to form a coordinated response," said Fred Weiss, Samaritan's Purse Canada's executive director.

(Mar. 20, 2012) In November, 2011, Ipsos Reid, on behalf of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) conducted a Canadian survey on “What Donors Want.” The good news for the sector is that most Canadians consider charities to be important in filling a gap of needs not being addressed by the public and private sector. However, a challenge remains in communicating and educating donors about fund allocation. Many donors fail to make the connection between investing in administration and effective operations, despite having high standards for how charities operate.

Native club owned by Cook given to BC museum | Lest We Forget: A rare ceremonial yew-wood club given to Captain James Cook by the Nuu-chah-nulth people of Vancouver Island in 1778 during his third and final voyage has returned to Canada for good. Philanthropist Michael Audain donated it to the University of British Columbia’s Museum of Anthropology (MOA) where it was unveiled Tuesday. It was the last Canadian artifact from Cook’s personal collection still in private hands. They’re all in museums in London, Vienna and Berlin, so believe it or not, this is the only Cook artifact from Cook’s voyage to Canada actually in Canada. This is the first time it’s been home since Cook took it with him on his way back to Hawaii 234 years ago.
