How one fundraiser secured her place at an international conference.
In my years as a fundraiser I’ve come across many inspiring stories. But without doubt the most inspiring tale of commitment to attend a conference is the story of my friend Sudeshna Mukherjee.

Tory budget toughens rules governing foreign charities | The Chronicle Herald

Tory budget toughens rules governing foreign charities | The Chronicle Herald: OTTAWA — The Conservative government is threatening to decertify foreign charities that do not act “in the national interest of Canada.”

Under rules announced Thursday in the 2012 budget, foreign groups can apply for registered charity status if they meet one of two criteria. The first is providing disaster relief or urgent humanitarian aid. The second is if they work in the national interest of Canada.

Survey Says: CharityVillage unpacks findings from the 2010 CGVSP

Survey Says: CharityVillage unpacks findings from the 2010 CGVSP: Statistics Canada released the results of its 2010 Canadian Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating (CSGVP) last Wednesday.

Released every three years, this iteration again provides some intriguing updates to how much (and how many) Canadians are giving back to their communities.

Here's the first number on StatCan's list: 24 million.

That represents the number of Canadians who made donations to charities in 2010.

Think about that. That's close to 84% of Canadians who took time to fish into their wallets or purses and shell out some cash for a cause. It also represents a total of $10.6 billion donated in 2010. However, the survey notes that both the percentage of the population donating and the total amount of donations remained virtually unchanged from 2007, with the average donation in 2010 at $446.

How to Attend a Conference as Yourself - Peter Bregman - Harvard Business Review: So how, at a conference when you don't know anyone, can you engage in a conversation without identifying your role? It's not easy. You'll be fighting against the tide. But try asking open-ended questions and try getting personal. Eventually you'll find out more about your fellow conference-goers and they'll find out more about you.

To date, more than 800 of your Canadian colleagues, friends and mentors have registered to attend AFP 2012 Vancouver. So at this year’s international conference, make time for some “true north strong and free” program activities – you won’t be sorry that you did! In fact, why not tweet about it? Conference participants and organizers will be following the conversation at #afpmeet or #afpwhatdrivesme.

Half of those 18-34 give to charities without checking

Half of those 18-34 give to charities without checking: Just over half of them will donate on the spur of the moment, which adds the probability they won't check to see if the organization is legitimate first, according to a survey commissioned by CanadaHelps.org and Capital One Canada for Fraud Prevention Month.

Only 19 per cent of millennials, as people in that age group are commonly known, are concerned about being victims of a scam - compared to 27 per cent in other age groups.

Millennials discover a whole world of philanthropy

Millennials discover a whole world of philanthropy: The Millennial generation, who are mostly in their 20s now, are often still in school or just starting their careers and therefore don't have as much money to donate as they do time.

"Older generations are able to donate more monetarily," Eveleigh says.

The statistics back that up. The highest rates of volunteering were found among young Canadians, while those who give the most money are more likely to be older, have higher household incomes and more formal education, according to Statistics Canada's National Survey of Giving

Canadians Agree That Charities are Important to Society - Press - AFP

Canadians Agree That Charities are Important to Society - Press - AFP: Canadians Agree That Charities are Important to Society

(Mar. 20, 2012) In November, 2011, Ipsos Reid, on behalf of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) conducted a Canadian survey on “What Donors Want.” The good news for the sector is that most Canadians consider charities to be important in filling a gap of needs not being addressed by the public and private sector. However, a challenge remains in communicating and educating donors about fund allocation. Many donors fail to make the connection between investing in administration and effective operations, despite having high standards for how charities operate.

Native club owned by Cook given to BC museum | Lest We Forget

Native club owned by Cook given to BC museum | Lest We Forget: A rare ceremonial yew-wood club given to Captain James Cook by the Nuu-chah-nulth people of Vancouver Island in 1778 during his third and final voyage has returned to Canada for good. Philanthropist Michael Audain donated it to the University of British Columbia’s Museum of Anthropology (MOA) where it was unveiled Tuesday. It was the last Canadian artifact from Cook’s personal collection still in private hands. They’re all in museums in London, Vienna and Berlin, so believe it or not, this is the only Cook artifact from Cook’s voyage to Canada actually in Canada. This is the first time it’s been home since Cook took it with him on his way back to Hawaii 234 years ago.

Fundraising students at Humber College seek rewarding careers that better society and make a difference - thestar.com: Think of Celebrity Apprentice but without the harsh “You’re fired!” at the end of a project.

“And thankfully we don’t have to do everything in one day,” laughs Malinda DenBok, who graduated from Humber College’s fundraising program last year.

But the popular reality TV show, in which competitors stage a charity event under the critical eye of business tycoon Donald Trump, does offer a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the workings of the charitable sector.

It’s an environment that captivates Humber students during the intensive, 12-month program called Fundraising and Volunteer Management.

Winnipeg retiree helps less fortunate as a volunteer in Mexico - Winnipeg Free Press: Sharon Helgason, a retired nursing administrator from Winnipeg, cringes when she hears that term from Canadians and Americans in this small town near Merida, in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

The energetic advocate for the needy, who founded the Chicxulub Food Bank in 2005 and other aid programs, has also been talked about as "Sharon Helgason and the Canadians" because she has inspired retired Canadians to volunteer in this part of Mexico.

Service Clubs: An Optimistic Future?

Service Clubs: An Optimistic Future?: New demographics present new challenges

Baby boomers are heading towards retirement, children are engaged in activities that require more parental involvement, and technology is constantly increasing the pace of day-to-day life. Membership is down as younger people fail to replace longtime members, and the average member age continues to rise.

All of these changes point to an obvious question: will service clubs continue to play a vital role in our communities?

GuelphMercury - Sustaining the future of philanthropy through social...: Sustaining the future of philanthropy through social enterprise

There are approximately 80,000 registered charitable organizations in Canada, and more than 40 per cent of them are operated entirely by volunteers.

Charities employ nearly two million Canadians, and in 2006, Canadians donated a total of $8.5 billion to charities. I found it staggering to learn that this $8.5 billion in donations, plus government funding, add up to nearly 70 per cent of charitable organization budgets.
